The Longest Coral Reef in the World

The Great Barrier Reef is 2300 km long and is sometimes described as the biggest living organism on earth. Threatened by pollution, tourism and increasing sea temperatures, but still an experience like few others accessible.These pictures are from a fantastic day trip to the the reefs Michaelmas and Breaking Patches.

After two hours of nothing but sea, the Great Barrier Reef suddenly rises from the seabottom, 300 metres underneath the surface.

 

Snorkling is one great way to experience the reefs.

 

Wally is the friendliest fish you can imagine, both on the surface...

 

..and when you meet him at his homeplace.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We were told that the sharks not would attack us.

This guy wasn't that lucky!

So with everybody alive and healthy with us, we returned to the mainland in this way: on the boom-netting.

Pretty hard when the boat speeded up!
